R. Aviva Richman will take stock of and lay out a vision for feminist Torah at Hadar, in rich conversation with Dr. Judith Plaskow, Laynie Soloman, and Rabbanit Devorah Zlochower. They will collectively tackle the questions of: Is feminist Torah primarily about who learns Torah? How you learn Torah? What Torah is learned? What practical outcomes emerge? Is it about gender? Power? Marginalized identity? Engage in a powerful evening of internal reflection and conversation that will drive Torah learning in a new direction.
Panelists
Judith Plaskow is professor emerita of religious studies at Manhattan College and a Jewish feminist theologian who has been teaching, writing and speaking about Jewish feminism and feminist studies in religion since the early 1970s. Co-founder and co-editor of the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion, she is author or editor of several works in feminist theology. These include Womanist Rising: A Feminist Reader in Religion and Weaving the Visions: New Patterns in Feminist Spirituality, both co-edited with Carol P. Christ; Standing Again at Sinai: Judaism from a Feminist Perspective and The Coming of Lilith: Essays on Feminism, Judaism, and Sexual Ethics 1972-2003. Her latest book, Goddess and God in the World: Conversations in Embodied Theology, is co-authored with Carol P. Christ. She is currently at work on a project on bodies, toilets, and social justice.
Laynie Soloman is a faculty member and Director of Educational Initiatives at SVARA: A Traditionally Radical Yeshiva, and is concurrently pursuing a Dual M.A. in Talmud/Rabbinics & Jewish Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City. Laynie has spent several years learning and teaching in various batei midrash including Yeshivat Hadar, where they serve as an adjunct faculty member. They are passionate about facilitating empowering experiences of Jewish learning that uplift the piously irreverent, queer, and subversive spirit of rabbinic text and theology, and they have taught and lectured on these topics on campuses, in synagogues, and in academic settings. As a queer and gender non-conforming educator, Laynie facilitates trainings and seminars on topics of LGBTQ affirmation/inclusion, and is a trained Keshet facilitator. When not in shul or learning Talmud, you can find Laynie reading about Liberation Theology, collecting comic books, and singing niggunim.
Rabbanit Devorah Zlochower is incoming Dean of Yeshivat Maharat and Executive Editor of the Lindenbaum Center for Halakhic Studies at YCT Rabbinical School. She has taught Talmud and halakhah for two decades at YCT, Yeshivat Hadar, Yeshivat Maharat, SAR High School and Drisha Insitute. Devorah served as Rosh Beit Midrash and Director of Full Time Programs at Drisha Institute. She has served on the board of JOFA and on the parent board of Aaron School, a special education school in Manhattan which her sons attend. Devorah’s writing and advocacy work has focused on religious feminism and inclusion of individuals with disabilities. She lives in Riverdale with her husband, Rabbi Dov Linzer, and their two sons.
