In Parashat Ki Tavo, we encounter beautiful blessings and truly chilling curses. At first it seems that the loveliness of the blessings is no match for the horror of the curses. Yet, it is possible to learn from the imbalance in the presentation of the berakhot and kelalot something that does not point in a negative and hurtful direction. What appears at first as God’s being stingy or reluctant with blessings actually points to the possibility of a deeper and more rewarding relationship, one that goes beyond payment and punishment, recompense and reward.
