The various laws of sacrifices are introduced with “God spoke to Moses, saying” or equivalent words that make clear that God is instructing the Israelites to bring sacrifices. Yet there are insistent countervoices in the biblical tradition that say that God does not want sacrifices. So are sacrifices a positive service of God—or not?
