The Joy of Being Heard
Exploring Psalm 116

Shai Held

Psalm 116, which is part of the (full) Hallel, is an exultant psalm of praise.   It tells the story of a person who had been in deep and dangerous crisis until he cried out and was saved by God.  In this session, we'll do two things: first, we'll engage in a close literary and theological reading of the psalm and get to know the logic and rhythm of how psalms of praise work; and second, we'll encounter a fascinating argument that Rav Yitzhak Hutner (20th c) makes based on this psalm: that being heard when we pray is a source of even greater joy than being answered. Recorded at the Rabbinic Yeshiva Intensive 2019.
