Raising Cain

The story of Cain in the bible is ambiguous about how we're supposed to understand Cain the man himself. Why exactly did he do what he did and how did he respond to God's warnings and punishments? We'll examine this story in the Torah and in the Midrash and consider where we feel Cain lines up as a character as well as the relevance of the question for a modern reader.
